SPRING, TEXAS — Federal agents descended on the suburban Texas home of a 20-year-old man Tuesday, after he allegedly hurled a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman — an act authorities described as bold, idiotic, and weirdly on-brand for 2026.
“You threw a literal fire bomb at the guy who makes the chatbot,” said one FBI agent who asked not to be named. “Do you know how many people just write strongly-worded Reddit posts? That’s what you’re supposed to do.”
The suspect reportedly told investigators he was making a statement about AI. The statement, legal experts note, will likely be heard in federal court.
Altman, who was not home at the time, responded on social media saying he was grateful everyone was safe and that the incident would not slow down the company’s mission. He then announced three new AI products.
Silicon Valley observers noted the irony that this may be one of the few problems OpenAI cannot solve with a large language model, though sources say the next model is working on it.
The suspect faces federal arson and terrorism-related charges. His court-appointed lawyer has reportedly already asked ChatGPT for help with the defense brief.
