In what historians are already calling either the largest civic gathering in United States history or simply “a lot of people with signs,” an estimated 9 million Americans organized 3,200 simultaneous “No Kings” rallies across the country on Saturday to express, in unambiguous terms, that they are not thrilled with the current direction of executive authority.
The flagship event in St. Paul, Minnesota featured Bruce Springsteen, Bernie Sanders, and Jane Fonda — a lineup that political analysts described as “exactly what you’d expect” and “at least the tickets were free.” Organizers confirmed that every single attendee arrived with a handmade sign, a sensible hat, and deeply held concerns, while roughly 40% also brought a folding chair, which experts say significantly elevates the threat level.
“We just want to make sure the message is clear,” said one protester, gesturing vaguely at the enormous crowd surrounding her. “Millions of people marching peacefully through every major city in America should send a pretty unambiguous signal.” When asked what signal, specifically, she said: “That we are extremely uncomfortable and would like this noted for the record.”
