NYC Mayor Offers To Personally Deliver Koh-i-Noor Diamond To India, Adds It Would Make A Really Nice Metro Card

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced this week that if given the opportunity to speak with King Charles III at an upcoming 9/11 memorial event, he would urge the British monarch to return the 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond to India — and, sources inside City Hall confirmed, would also suggest it be briefly displayed at the New York Public Library “because New Yorkers deserve nice things too, just for a week, maybe two.”

“The Koh-i-Noor belongs to India. This is a matter of historical justice,” Mamdani told reporters outside City Hall, flanked by aides who were visibly unsure whether this was a foreign policy announcement or a very elaborate pitch to King Charles to like him more than the other mayors.

Buckingham Palace responded with a statement confirming that the diamond is “part of the historic royal collection” and that “the Crown has no plans to alter its custodianship,” which royal watchers noted is the political equivalent of someone saying “I hear you” without moving a single muscle.

Indian officials welcomed the Mayor’s comments, while also gently noting that New York City’s mayor does not have jurisdiction over the British Crown Jewels, a constitutional reality that City Hall’s legal team confirmed in a memo described internally as “yeah, we know, but it’s good politics.”

The diamond, which has been the subject of repatriation debates for over a century, is currently set in the late Queen Mother’s crown, where it has remained, extremely not going anywhere, for decades. When reached for comment, the diamond did not respond.
