Canberra, Australia — In a move hailed as “long overdue” by digital linguists and “bloody brilliant” by everyday Australians, the federal government has announced the creation of Australia’s first official national emoji: the “Shrimp on the Barbie.”
The new emoji, which will be added to the Unicode standard later this year, features a perfectly grilled shrimp (or prawn, depending on who you ask) sizzling on a barbecue, complete with artistic rendering of heat waves and a tiny Australian flag toothpick.
