NEW YORK — The WNBA Draft is shaping up to be one of the most star-studded in the league’s history, with three elite prospects — Azzi Fudd, Olivia Miles, and Awa Fam — locked in a fierce battle for the coveted No. 1 overall pick as franchises prepare to reshape their rosters.
Fudd, who wrapped up a brilliant final season at UConn averaging 17.3 points per game, is widely considered the frontrunner. She will join her girlfriend and former UConn teammate Paige Bueckers in Dallas, creating what analysts are already calling the league’s most talked-about backcourt pairing in years.
“This draft class is exceptional,” said one WNBA scout. “Any of the top three could go first and no one would blink. Franchises are fighting each other behind closed doors over the lottery order.”
Olivia Miles brings elite playmaking ability and court vision that has drawn comparisons to some of the league’s all-time great point guards, while Awa Fam’s combination of length, athleticism and skill has had scouts breathless since her freshman year.
The draft, set to take place Thursday evening, is expected to draw record television viewership as the WNBA continues its remarkable surge in popularity. Season ticket sales are up league-wide, broadcast deals have never been more lucrative, and for the first time in the league’s history, people are arguing about the draft on social media in tones usually reserved for the NFL.
Not bad for a league that, a decade ago, was still fighting for primetime slots. Thursday night, at least, belongs entirely to them.
